Daylilies

Many people think of daylilies as the common orange ditchweed growing by the roadside. Today they come in most colors of the rainbow, only lacking a true blue to complete the spectrum. Quite edible - try the blossoms in your next salad. They like sun and average soil - full sun in the North and maybe a bit of shade to keep the blossoms from fading so quickly in the South. Daylilies are as carefree as cultivated plants get heat, drought and pest resistant. They prefer a fertile moist soil, but be careful when adding any fertilizer high in nitrogen, or you may end up with lush foliage at the expense of flowers. Deer may nibble young shoots and buds but can be dissuaded from this unseemly behavior with deer repellent or a shotgun. We highly recommend LIQUID FENCE, as a repellant as deer avoid it, and it won't clog your sprayer. It is also effective against bunnies, groundhogs, moles, voles, and shrews. Nothing seems to stop raccoons except hot pepper. Daylilies bloom from May till frost here in zone 6. They increase slowly without being invasive, are easily divided and very floriferous.

Effective with any of the daisy-like flowers or grasses in the sunny border. Zones 3-9 *=TET, Dor=dormant, SEV=Semi-evergreen, EV=evergreen, Ext=extended bloom period, Fr=fragrant, Re=rebloomer, Noc=blooms open in evening.

All daylily prices are per DOUBLE FAN (though I frequently send more) unless otherwise noted. All are dug just prior to shipping from our established clumps.
