A Little About the Nursery

Welcome to Hoot Owl Hollow Nursery!

The Perennial Gardens at Hoot Owl Hollow have been in existence for over 40 years, gradually evolving from very practical vegatable gardens, to less filling, but more soul satisfying ornamental beds. Over the past twenty or so years they have been greatly expanded to the point where, despite having 108 acres available, we are running out of space on the ten or so acres that we intensively garden. The rest of the land is primarily in woods, lovely to walk through any time of the year, but especially in the spring to see the wild flowers.

Hoot Owl Hollow is primarily a collage of year round pleasure gardens, plant collections, a dotage in retirement, a scandal to people who find nature untidy, as well as a small business and our home. We offer the perfect combination of the best of the tried and true and the best of the recent introductions. The collections have multiplied over the years to include enough to propagate for the discriminating collector and enthusiastic gardener.

Please come and visit us at 4308 Rhoric Road, New Marshfield, Ohio. (just 7 miles west of Athens). This is a year round garden and there is almost always something blooming, or otherwise showing off, even in the coldest weather. October through late April, please write or e-mail ahead as we do not keep scheduled open garden hours then. We will have an open weekend to see the daffodils if they're going at full tilt before our opening in late April. Keep an eye on the Hoot Owl Hollow blog or our FACEBOOK page for the details. Our Map and directions should get you here, though most people just seem to use GPS (punch in our city as Athens, not New Marshfield - long story) and do just fine. If you're coming in from out of town, which is almost anywhere on the planet, please email for suggestions on motels or bed and breakfast inns and restarants. Those with private planes can land at Ohio University Airport in Albany OH, approimately 12 miles away.

A trip to Hoot Owl Hollow would not be complete without a visit to Athens County's other local nurseries. For a dizzying assortment of tropicals plus a huge selection of everything else, visit Glasshouse Works in Stewart. They're open Fridays and Saturdays all year from 10 to 6. Companion Plants offers plants and seeds for almost every herb imaginable. Another fine Athens County nursery is Mason and Lisa Chambers' Five Springs Farm. They offer trees and shrubs plus some perennials. As you can see, Athens County boasts a bounty of fine specialty nurseries. Plan a weekend botanical safari; reasonable lodgings are available, eateries abound - Athens is a university town and kids do like to eat - but once off campus there is plenty to do for those of us past a certain age whose diets consist of something other than beer and pizza. For those more interested in camping, the Hocking Hills are just down the road with campsites, cabins, hiking trails and caves to explore.
